Did you know? Potatoes originally hail from South America and were introduced to Europe in the 16th century. Now, there are over 5,000 varieties worldwide!

Here’s how to get your potatoes growing:

  • Chitting Potatoes: (encouraging the seed to sprout before planting) can lead to an earlier harvest than planting directly into ground. To do this, place the seed potatoes into an open container such as an egg box, in a light and airy position, protected from frost. The potatoes will grow small shoots.
  • Planting: Once the risk of frost has passed (typically March-May), it’s time to plant! Prepare your soil by digging and removing any weeds. Create shallow ridges 50cm apart, and plant your seed potatoes 12cm deep and 22cm apart.
  • Growing: As your plants reach 20cm tall, “earth them up” by drawing soil around the lower leaves. This protects the developing potatoes and encourages more growth.
  • Harvesting: You’ll be enjoying your homegrown spuds in no time! First earlies are ready around 10 weeks after planting, while second earlies take a bit longer.

Top tip: If you’ve chitted your potatoes (encouraged them to sprout), handle them carefully when planting to avoid damaging those precious shoots!

Visit Woodbank Garden Centre today and pick up your seed potatoes, plus all the gardening essentials you need for a successful harvest. Happy growing!
